"Since 2000 I have been working on the development of sculptures with expressive motion as a starting point."

The Mazzelaar - 2003

De Mazzelaar is a Sisyphus machine, a machine that lifts a stone, brings it up in the air and then has it fall, to subsequently grasp it and start the cycle all over again and again. A machine that encourages the spectator to never give up hope.

In De Mazzelaar the stone is being lifted by four different grasping mechanisms in total, taking it over in sequence. Therefore there is, in addition to a fight between the stone and the machine, also a fight among the different grasping mechanisms.

De Mazzelaar has been on display a.o. in the exposition The World of Henk Hofland in the Press-museum Amsterdam in 2003.
